Jason S.M. Smith
Executive Director, Now or Never PAC
Jason Smith is the Principal of Smith Capitol Strategies, a public affairs firm with offices in Houston and Austin specializing in legislative lobbying services and political consulting services. He established this firm in August 2010 after having provided these same services to the clients of Capitol Alliance, LLC in 2009 and 2010.
Prior to August of 2009, he spent seven years serving as a staff member in both the Texas House of Representatives and the Texas State Senate, working two sessions in each house of the Texas Legislature. In the House, Jason served as Committee Clerk and Policy Director for the Urban Affairs Committee, which focused him on local government and affordable housing issues. During his tenure in the Texas Senate, he worked for State Senator Tommy Williams (R-The Woodlands) as Legislative Policy and Budget Advisor. During that time, he worked on a wide array of policy and budget areas including labor and workforce, affordable housing, border security, homeland security, insurance, economic development, election policy and local government issues.
In 2007, Jason served as the lead policy advisor on Senate Bill 792, which established a statewide policy on the use of toll roads in the state’s transportation system. Since that time, he has been recognized as one of the capitol’s premier transportation policy experts among capitol staff, lobbyists, and legislators.
During the last ten years, Jason has worked on the staff of more than fifteen campaigns for local, state and federal offices. He served as campaign manager during many of these campaigns and has considerable inside knowledge from these experiences. Consequently, he has created and maintained a robust network of friends and contacts among constituent groups, trade associations, Republican grassroots organizations and local government officials and staff in the Houston area and around the state. Most prominently, Jason served as National Deputy Political Director for the Rick Perry Presidential Campaign during the 2012 Primary Election. He specializes in campaign strategy, message creation, and grassroots organization.
Jason’s career has been uniquely grounded in both policy work and campaigns, which has proven to provide a successful bridge for those who have sought his advice and counsel. Jason is fourth generation Texan and a native Houstonian. He attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas and received his B.A. from the University of Houston with a concentration in Political Science and Business Administration.
